Update your browserThe Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) is the most extensive program of its kind in the state, operating as a mobile dental clinic that delivers essential oral health care to underserved communities across Texas.
Abilene has hosted a TMOM event in 2013, 2015, and 2023. This year, TMOM will be held July 18-19, 2025, at the Abilene Convention Center.
Typically hosting four events annually, TMOM adapts to the needs of each community—smaller towns may host a 20-chair clinic, while larger cities, such as Abilene, can accommodate a 40-chair setup.
The Community Foundation of Abilene awarded a $15,000 grant for the event, and Foundation donors contributed an additional $11,000 to the cause.
“Access to care is an issue that requires the cooperation and participation of multiple organizations and volunteers,” says Katie Alford, Community Foundation of Abilene President/CEO. “The Foundation is honored to partner with all those championing this effort to benefit those in need of critical dental care.”
TMOM events are made possible by local community leaders who have taken the lead in planning and coordinating various aspects, including registration and triage, treatment, prosthetics, and hospitality.
Volunteer dental professionals and non-clinical helpers come from all over the state. Over the next two days, the Abilene event can treat up to 800 patients, providing services such as dental cleanings, fillings, and tooth extractions at no cost to the patient.
“Texas has the largest dental association in the nation and is up for the challenge to continue to take care of the less fortunate,” says Shea Hall, TMOM Abilene committee chair. “A simple smile is the start of opening your heart and being compassionate to others.”
Patients seeking treatment are asked to bring their current medications along with them.
Doors open at 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday; treatment will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and patients will be turned away once the facility reaches full capacity.
Some pre-existing health conditions may disqualify potential patients, as the mission is designed for basic care and not a hospital setting.
TMOM has visited more than 60 Texas cities, providing more than $31.5 million in donated care to nearly 55,000 patients.
