Janet Parkey Memorial Scholarship

Janet Grace Parkey was born on January 1, 1942, in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in home economics from Oklahoma State University, Janet began her 33-year teaching career. She moved to Abilene in 1979 to teach home economics at Madison Middle School, a position she held until 1991. Janet was then named Associate Principal at Abilene High School. Her first assignment as Associate Principal was to smooth the transition for the first class to enter Abilene High under the 1992 boundary changes. She succeeded, making the freshmen “feel like Eagles” from day one. Ms. Parkey was known for championing the uncelebrated students. As Abilene High Principal Royce Curtis recalled: “She had a true soft spot in her heart for the underdogs, the kids who don’t have the fairest shakes in life…Not many people are willing to do that…There’s no limit to what (the campus) would do and give for her.” Likewise, there was no limit to what she did and gave for her students. Janet Parkey’s giving spirit will live on through the Janet Parkey Memorial Scholarship.
