Glenda Bryan Memorial Scholarship
Glenda was born May 24, 1937, in Talpa, Texas, during the Great Depression. She attended schools in Talpa and Ballinger. She grew up on a farm where life was hard and was raised by hardworking parents who instilled in her a solid work ethic. Her dad really wanted her to attend college, but had no way to help her get there. She married Joe Bryan on January 24, 1956.
By 1962, she had four small children and became a stay-at-home Mom who supported her husband in his farming and ranching career. Though she was a true Bearcat, Glenda became a huge supporter of the Winters Blizzards, along with her children and six grandchildren, all of whom were WHS graduates.
For the first 21 years of their marriage, Glenda was a homemaker caring for her family and taking an active role in assisting Joe with his farming operation. Like many farm wives, she worked cattle, moved equipment, and accompanied him on a custom harvest to South Texas, driving grain trucks to the elevator. In 1977, Glenda began her second career at Selkirk-Dry Manufacturing, working on the line making grills before transitioning to the main office in 1986, totaling 33 years of service before her retirement in 2010.
Glenda took the job at Selkirk-Dry Manufacturing to help her daughter, Becky, afford a college education. She worked and gave Becky half her paycheck. When the company offered a 401(k) plan, she joined.
In 2020, at 83, Glenda passed away in Abilene. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. This scholarship is funded directly by her decision to make a difference in her children's lives, and now extends to the award recipients. It was always on Glenda's heart to help others achieve their education goals. In her memory, her family establishes this scholarship to help students further their education.
