Salute to Citizens Scholarship

The "Salute to Citizens" scholarship salutes all those inspiring action to make their community a better place.

The scholarship was established by Hannah Durbin. Originally from Kentucky, Durbin moved to Abilene, Texas, where her station assignment relocated her to Dyess Air Force Base. Previously, Durbin and her husband were stationed in Germany. Durbin has served in the Air Force for seven years and recently took a job as an Adjunct Professor at McMurry University.

Citizenship is often understood as a legal status that people either have or don't; it is something that conveys certain privileges such as residency, voting, and access to government services.

This scholarship is about reconceptualizing citizenship as something different. Rather than a legal status, think of citizenship as an office that we, members of a political community, hold when we participate in democracy.

It can be helpful to think of citizenship as a verb; excellence in citizenship is about harnessing political action to make positive change in your community.

Proceeds from Durbin's book, "Maeve’s Mighty Mission," help fund the scholarship. In her book, Durbin discusses the topic of community as readers join Maeve in her quest for the perfect job, which transforms into an exciting journey exploring the importance of citizenship and democratic participation. Durbin's book discusses themes of public service and community engagement to help inspire young citizens. (Published October 23, 2024).
